I can’t believe that there isn’t a built in way to rename tags within the Google Reader UI! Shocking.
Quickest way I’ve found is to export your feeds (Settings | Import / Export), edit the XML by hand (fortunately my 100 or so feeds are organised within ~12 folders), delete all of your subs from GReader [...]
